Game Story
The Newfoundland Growlers saw their six-game home winning streak come to an end Friday night in a goal-filled evening, falling 7-5 to the Reading Royals.
Reading opened the scoring at 3:58 of the first period when Scott Dornbrock capitalized on a five-on-three powerplay firing it past Michael Garteig for an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Moore tied the game at one with 10:48 to play in the middle frame, capitalizing on a bouncing puck that Callum Booth couldn’t track.
Reading re-stored their lead just over a minute later when Michael Hunterbrinker made good on a one-timer for a 2-1 score. J.J. Piccinich replied with eight minutes left in the first period on the powerplay tying the game at two.
Piccinich added his second of the period with 3:44 to play in the first period putting the Growlers up by one after 20 minutes.
Alex Krushelnyski roofed a backhand past Garteig with just under four minutes expired in the second period tying the game at 3-3. Adam Schmidt followed that up by giving the Royals their second lead of the game at 6:05 of the second period making it 4-3.
Sam Babintsev annihilated Booth’s water bottle with 8:16 left in the second period tying the game at 4-4. Hunterbrinker continued the offensive outburst scoring his second of the evening and giving the Royals the lead once again with 2:40 to play in the second period for a 5-4 score.
Hunterbrinker completed the hat-trick at 7:38 of the third period after his shot took an unfortunate bounce off a Growler, making the score 6-4. The goal marked the first two-goal lead of the night.
Josh Kestner cut the lead in half just over 30 seconds later firing home his ninth of the season making it a 6-5 game, but Josh MacDonald restored the two-goal lead just a minute and a half later for a 7-5 game which would hold up as the final score.
