Game Story

The Newfoundland Growlers completed the mid-week sweep and extended their winning streak to four games Wednesday night with a commanding 5-2 win over the Worcester Railers.

A scoreless opening period saw the Growlers apply lots of pressure in the Railers zone, outshooting the visitors 10-6 and was a period full of special teams as both clubs had a 5-on-3 power play.

The second period made up for the lack of offense in the first period with five goals. Nick Bligh opened the scoring 2:21 in the second period sliding it past Mario Culina off a turnover in the Growlers end. The goal marked the first Railers lead against the Growlers this season. The Growlers looked to have the equalizer nearly two minutes after but was immediately waved off by the referee.

Josh Kesnter, fresh off a two-goal performance last night, picked up right where he left off tying things up at 5:29 of the second period after Brady Ferguson corralled a big rebound from Mitch Gilliam before outwaiting him in the crease and sliding it across to Kestner for his seventh of the season.

Worcester re-stored their lead just under two minutes later as Woody Hudson re-directed a Mike Cornell shot top shelf for a power play tally making it a 2-1 game.

The Growlers tied things up again with 3:11 to play in the middle frame when J.J. Picchinich roofed a wrist shot over Gillam’s glove to tie things at 2.  Brady Ferguson followed that up just 23 seconds later to give the Growlers their first lead of the game making it a 3-2 score. Worcester started Mitch Gillam was injured on the play and left the game stopping 22 of 25 shots faced.

Marcus Power extended the Growlers lead to two with 5:01 to play in the final frame off a slick forehand to backhand breakaway move, and Giorgio Estephan hit the empty net sealing the deal making the final score 5-2.
