Game Story
The Newfoundland Growlers returned to Mile One Centre ice in fine fashion Friday night defeating the Worcester Railers 5-2.
Derian Plouffe opened the scoring at 12:39 of the opening frame, banging in a rebound off a beautiful rush by James Melindy giving the Growlers a 1-0 lead. Matt Bradley looked to extend the lead to two off the ensuing faceoff, but struck the crossbar.
The Growlers kept Evan Buitenhuis busy in the opening 20 minutes of play, firing 15 shots on net.
Worcester came out of the gate ready to go in the second period as Nick Sorkin tied the game up just one minute in, and applied pressure all period long firing 14 pucks at Eamon McAdam.
Tyler Barnes gave the Railers their first lead of the game 1:29 into the third period after cleaning up a rebound in front of McAdam’s crease for a 2-1 game, but after that it was all Growlers as they scored four unanswered goals.
Zach O’Brien evened the game up at 4:09 of the third capitalizing on a 4-on-3 powerplay for his 17th of the season. James Melindy followed that up with 8:30 remaining in the third period knocking home his own rebound giving the Growlers a 3-2 lead.
Hudson Elynuik and Scott Pooley added empty netters for a 5-2 final.
