Game Story

The Newfoundland Growlers capped off their 2018-19 Inaugural Season with a storybook ending, by carving their name in the history books and becoming the first St. John’s professional hockey team to win a championship, with a 4-3 win over the Toledo Walleye before a sold-out Mile One Centre to clinch the 2019 Kelly Cup.

Matt Bradley lifted the roof off Mile One Centre with 1:29 remaining in the first period, re-directing a Zach O’Brien cross-crease dish past Pat Nagle to give the Growlers a 1-0 lead which they carried into the dressing room after the opening 20 minutes of play.

Josh Kestner extended the lead to 2-0 just barely a minute into the second period, cleaning up a scramble in front of the Walleye net and making no mistake for his ninth of the Kelly Cup Playoffs, but Kevin Tansey replied for the Walleye just 1:36 later ripping a point blast through Michael Garteig to trim the Growlers lead to 2-1.

Giorgio Estephan re-stored the two-goal lead at 10:04 of the second period, taking a picture-perfect pass from Josh Kestner and beating Nagle glove-side putting the home team up 3-1, and just 3:28 later Estephan followed that up by netting his second of the period for a 4-1 lead.

Hunter Smith stopped the bleeding at the 5:13 mark of the third period, banging in a rebound for his first of the playoffs cutting the Growlers lead to 4-2, and A.J. Jenks added another with 2:36 remaining for a 4-3 game.

The Walleye pulled Pat Nagle with 1:30 to play in the game for an extra attacker, but Michael Garteig delivered clutch saves to preserve the 4-3 lead, and to win the Kelly Cup.
