ST. JOHN’S, NL –The Newfoundland Growlers, ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced today that high-scoring defenseman Ben Finkelstein has been assigned to the club by the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
Finkelstein, a 24-year-old South Burlington, Vermont native, made his professional debut in the ECHL last season with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and made an immediate impact.
In 35 games played, the 5-9 right-handed rearguard scored 11 goals and added 21 assists for 32 points and a plus-11 rating. His stellar season earned him ECHL All-Rookie Team honours as he finished his impressive rookie campaign tied for first among all rookie defenders in goals and tied for second in points.
Prior to turning pro, Finkelstein played two seasons of NCAA hockey at Boston College, playing a total of 56 games, scoring six goals and chipping in with 25 assists for 31 total points playing alongside Newfoundlander Alex Newhook. In 2019-20, he was named to the Hockey East Second All-Star team for his stellar five-goal, 21-point season.
Before joining Boston College, Finkelstein served as the assistant captain to the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks and earned Defenseman of the Year honours with 34 points (8G, 26A) in just 23 games.
