Game Story

An impressive comeback bid from the Newfoundland Growlers fell short on Saturday night at C.B.S. Arena as they suffered defeat for the first time this season in a 6-4 loss to the Adirondack Thunder.

Ryan Chyzowski opened the scoring eight minutes in when an Adirondack clearing attempt hit Chyzowski and wound up in the net behind goalie Mareks Mitens. That lead would last little time however as Pete MacArthur got the visitors level a minute later before Nick Rivera and Tyler Irvine tallies saw the Thunder go into the first intermission up 3-1.

Blake Thompson added a fourth for Adirondack midway through the second period, but Marc Johnstone would get the Growlers back within a pair before the end of the middle frame with a diving backhand effort.

Newfoundland clawed back to within one thanks to a brilliant individual effort from Marcus Power four minutes into the third to make it 4-3 — Power’s first goal of the season.

After Thompson scored his second of the night to reclaim a two-goal advantage for the Thunder, Chyzowski ensured he wouldn’t be the only player to pick up a pair of goals as he cut to the middle of the ice and beat Mitens glove side with just over eight minutes to go.

Rivera would respond to make it a pair for him in the game and 6-4 on the scoreboard and despite a late push from the hosts with the net empty that was as close as they’d get to keep the winning streak alive.
