Game Story

The Newfoundland Growlers opened their home ice account with a convincing 4-1 win over the Adirondack Thunder on Friday night at C.B.S. Arena.

Triston Pomerleau would open the scoring just before the first intermission with a tight angle shot from just above the goal line which beat an unsuspecting Mareks Mitens in the Adirondack net with 20 seconds left in the period.

The visitors wasted little time finding an equalizer to start the second as Nick Rivera replied for the Thunder just to 40 seconds after the break. Luckily for the hosts, the trend of shorthanded goal production continued as Derian Plouffe found himself in all alone while killing a 5-on-3, beating Mitens blocker side to regain the lead with roughly seven minutes left in the middle frame.

Noel Hoefenmayer would add to the special team’s success moments later with a powerplay blast from the point to give the Growlers a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

Hoefenmayer would deposit his second of the night into an empty net with 90 seconds left in the game to make it 4-1 and see the Growlers improve their franchise-best start to a season to 5-0.
