SERIES PREVIEW | FEBRUARY 9-13 VS. MAINE

The Newfoundland Growlers are set to host the Maine Mariners for the first time this season, kicking off a four-game series between the divisional rivals on Wednesday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.

Newfoundland has dealt with a heavily depleted roster in recent weeks and as a result, they find themselves slipping down the North Division standings and losers of six straight contests.

North Division leaders, the Reading Royals, left town this past weekend with six points from a possible six as they swept the Growlers across three games, the most recent outing a 5-1 Royals victory on Saturday evening in St. John’s.

Maine is coming off an impressive road sweep of their own having topped the Trois-Rivières Lions in three straight at the Colisée Vidéotron last weekend — the third victory a 5-4 OT win on Saturday where Zach Malatesta scored the deciding goal during 3-on-3 action.

These two teams have met on just one previous occasion this season, way back on November 26 at Cross Insurance Arena. Todd Skirving scored the game winning goal while the Growlers were shorthanded in a textbook 4-2 road victory.

The Growlers currently trail the Mariners by six points having played seven fewer games, however, thanks to the adjusted standings format, Newfoundland sit one spot ahead of Maine in third in the division due to their superior points percentage.

Good news has come for Newfoundland from a personnel standpoint ahead of Wednesday as several key players are projected to return to the lineup including co-leading goal scorer Orrin Centazzo and standout goaltender Keith Petruzzelli.

Not only will the Mariners visit mark the return of several familiar faces on the ice, but fans will also be back in the building for the first time in the calendar year for what should be four spirited contests this coming week.

Puck drops is set for 7:00 pm on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evening, while Sunday is a 2:00 pm matinee start. Growlers fans can watch all four games live on FloSports (subscription required), listen to the call on Mixlr, or follow along on Twitter (@NLGrowlers) for game updates and highlights.

WHO TO WATCH:

NFL – Ryan Chyzowski (F): With the Growlers lacking creativity and production up front amid recent struggles, the return of Chyzowski from the Toronto Marlies is an exciting one for Newfoundland. Picking up 11 points in the 13 games he played with the Growlers earlier this season, the 21-year-old brings a proven scoring threat to the lineup for this crucial four game stretch.

MNE – Pascal Laberge (F): A former second round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers back in 2016, Laberge has been an important offensive piece for the Mariners since landing in Maine this season — he currently leads his side in points with 32 in 28 games played.
