RECAP | GROWLERS BESTED 2-1 IN OT BY MARINERS

Newfoundland Growlers (41-20-4-0) vs. Maine Mariners (32-31-5-3) Friday, April 15 – St. John’s, NL

OFFICIAL GAME SHEETGame Story

The Newfoundland Growlers settled for a single point as they dropped a tight 2-1 decision in overtime to the Maine Mariners on Friday night at Cross Insurance Arena.

Todd Skirving opened the scoring for Newfoundland 5:45 into the 1st as Ben Finkelstein spotted the Thunder Bay native alone in front where he beat Stefanos Lekkas with a hot one-timed shot to make it 1-0 Growlers.

It took nearly 12 minutes for the Mariners to get their first shot on goal of the game but Rylan Parenteau, making his Growlers debut in goal, was tested heavily on Maine’s first attempt as he flashed the glove to keep out a backhand breakaway effort. Newoundland led 1-0 after 20 minutes.

After dominating the shot department with a 14-4 advantage in the opening 20 minutes, Newfoundland were outshot 8-6 in the middle frame by Maine but thanks to some timely saves by Parenteau, the Growers held onto their 1-0 lead going into the 3rd.

Andrew Peski broke the deadlock for Maine with 5:26 left in regulation as his shot from the blueline got through a crowd and past Parenteau to tie things at 1-1 in the late goings.

After Parenteau made a great save on Matthew Santos in the overtime period, he could do little about the rebound as Santos slotted home to win it 2-1 for the Mariners.
