ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers, ECHL affiliates of the Toronto Maple Leafs, are proud to announce that forward Zach O’Brien has won the ECHL Sportsmanship Award for the 2021-22 ECHL season.
The award is presented annually to the player who is judged to have exhibited the best sportsmanship combined with a high standard of playing ability.
This season, O’Brien exploded for a new franchise record in points with 78, including 28 goals and 50 assists, while collecting just four penalty minutes in 52 games played.
This is the second time in O’Brien’s career that he was won the ECHL’s prestigious award, having collected the hardware in the Growlers’ inaugural season in 2018-19. O’Brien is just the third player in ECHL history to win the award more than once.
O’Brien, who was named to the All-ECHL Second Team yesterday, leads the league with 28 power-play points, ranks second with 20 power-play assists and is third with 50 assists.
The Growlers kick off their season-ending road trip tonight at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine against the Maine Mariners.
