4) Keith Petruzzelli Named to All-Rookie Team, 2nd All Star Team
When a tall and lanky kid from Wilbraham, Massachusetts made his first appearance in goal for the Growlers on October 22 in Trois-Riviéres, Quebec, little did we know this was the start of perhaps the best season of goaltending in Growlers history.
That lanky kid was Keith Petruzzelli, who set the league on fire in his first season as a professional. He hit the ground running, winning Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month honours in October, just the first month of the season.
His strong play blossomed as he settled into his rookie campaign as he continued to raise the bar, once again winning Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month honours in February.
When the dust settled on his incredible season, he had amassed a 16-6-1 record with a 2.01 goals against average and a .927 save percentage with five shutouts in just 23 games played.
As a league leader in most statistical categories, his remarkable run caught the eye of voters around the league as he was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team as the league’s top rookie goaltender and was named to the ECHL All-Second All Star Team, becoming the first Growlers goaltender to earn such honours.
