5) O’Brien Sets Growlers Single-Season Points Record
While the Growlers sat inactive during the 2020-21 ECHL season due to the pandemic, Growlers legend and St. John’s native Zach O’Brien took his talents to Germany where he finished second in scoring in the DEL2 league.
He returned home when the Growlers resumed play in 2021-22 and set about rewriting the Growlers record books.
O’Brien entered the season as the highest-scoring player in team history, both overall and in terms of single-season production, but somehow found another level in the 2021-22 campaign.
In 53 games played, O’Brien recorded a scintillating 28 goals and 50 assists for 78 points, good for second-most in the entire ECHL. On April 2 at home against the Worcester Railers, O’Brien scored a goal to record his 69th point of the season, breaking his own club record for points in a single season, previously set at 68 points during the Kelly Cup season in 2018-19.
Thanks to his herculean offensive season, O’Brien remains alone atop several major statistical categories in Growlers franchise history, including goals (81), assists (111) and points (192).
For his efforts, O'Brien won the ECHL Sportsmanship Award for the second time in his career and was named to the All-ECHL Second All Star Team. Well deserved for the greatest season in Growlers history.
