SERIES PREVIEW | OCTOBER 28 & 29 VS. TROIS-RIVIÉRES

The Newfoundland Growlers put their perfect record on the line away from home this weekend, where they’ll face the Trois-Rivières Lions in a doubleheader beginning on Friday night at the Colisée Vidéotron.

Newfoundland walked away from their first series of the season with three wins from three as they swept the Reading Royals on home ice at the Mary Brown’s Centre – the most recent victory of the three an emphatic 6-2 result on Sunday evening.

Plenty of the Growlers offensive weapons deserve praise for their output this past weekend against the Royals but goaltender Dryden McKay stole many of the headlines with convincing wins in his first two starts as a professional, earning ECHL Goalie of the Week honours for his stellar play.

Trois-Rivières look a much different group than the one Newfoundland faced 21 times across last year’s regular season and playoffs with plenty of fresh faces on the roster this time around.

While the Lions are expected to push the rest of the North Division once again in 2022-23, growing pains should serve as no surprise given the turnover of personnel. Through their opening four games, they’ve won just once.

The last time these two met was back on May 3 at Mary Brown’s Centre where Newfoundland walked away 5-2 winners in the seventh and deciding game of an epic first round playoff matchup between the ECHL’s only two Canadian teams.

While some of the main characters on both sides of this budding rivalry have since moved on, Growlers fans can still expect two feisty affairs this weekend as the club embarks on its first road trip of the season.

Puck drops is set for 8:30 pm on Friday and 4:30 pm on Saturday evening (all times listed in NL time). Growlers fans can watch both games live on FloSports (subscription required), listen to the call on Mixlr, or follow along on Twitter (@NLGrowlers) for game updates and highlights.

WHO TO WATCH:

NFL – Zach O’Brien (F): Leading the Growlers in scoring through three games (0G, 7A) despite not yet finding the back of the net, O’Brien will be looking no further than this weekend for an opportunity to get off the schneid in the goalscoring department.

TR – William Leblanc(F): Joining the team midway through last year from the University of Quebec Trois-Rivières, Leblanc has started his first full season with the Lions on a good note, sitting tied on the team in both goals (3) and points (4).
