The Newfoundland Growlers suffered their first regulation loss of the season in a 2-0 defeat against the Maine Mariners on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Taylor Hinam opened the scoring for the Mariners inside 90 seconds as he tapped in all alone at the backdoor to make it 1-0 for the visitors after the first period.
Josh Boyko stopped all 18 shots he faced in the Maine goal through two periods of play as the Mariners held onto their one goal lead going into the 3rd.
Boyko would stop a further 15 shots in the third period to secure a 33 save shutout, while Patrick Shea sealed it with an empty netter 16 seconds before the end of regulation to make it a 2-0 final in favour of the Mariners.
