The Newfoundland Growlers returned from the holiday break with a 6-4 defeat against the Toledo Walleye on Tuesday night at the Huntington Center.
Trenton Bliss opened the scoring for Toledo six minutes into the game with a quick wrister under the arm of Dryden McKay to make it 1-0 Walleye early.
Todd Skirving equalized for the Growlers three minutes before the first intermission as he was spotted by Zach O’Brien in the slot, making no mistake to bring it to 1-1 after the 1st.
Toledo pulled away in the middle portion of the second period with three goals in a six-minute span through Riley McCourt, Brandon Hawkins and a second of the game for Bliss to make it 4-1 Walleye.
Keenan Suthers got the Growlers back within two before the end of the middle frame with a tidy breakaway finish as Toledo lead 4-2 after 40 minutes.
Zach Solow finished off some slick powerplay passing to get the Growlers within one eight minutes into the 3rd but the Walleye took just three minutes to respond as Tommy Parran’s point shot got through everyone to make it 5-3 Toledo with 8:37 left in regulation.
Joseph Nardi added further wiggle room for the Walleye before Brett Budgell snagged one in the final minute for Newfoundland to make it a 6-4 final in favour of Toledo.
