ST. JOHN’S, NL – The Newfoundland Growlers, ECHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, are proud to announce that forward Zach O’Brien has been named the Inglasco ECHL Player of the Week for the week ending January 8.
O’Brien, a 30-year-old St. John’s native, racked up an impressive nine points (4G, 5A) in just three games against the Trois-Rivières Lions this past weekend on home ice. Bringing his season tally up to 52 points in 29 appearances, he sits atop the ECHL scoring race, some six points ahead of second place.
This Player of the Week nod is the third major accolade this season for O’Brien who was previously named Player of the Month back in November before being named an Eastern Conference All-Star for the 2023 ECHL All-Star Classic scheduled for next week in Norfolk.
Zach O’Brien joins Isaac Johnson and Todd Skirving as the three Newfoundland skaters named ECHL Player of the Week so far in 2022-23, while goaltenders Luke Cavallin and Dryden McKay have each nabbed ECHL Goaltender of the Week honours this season.
On behalf of Zach O’Brien, a case of pucks will be donated to a Newfoundland youth hockey organization by Inglasco, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Inglasco has donated more than 47,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
The Growlers return to action on Wednesday, January 11 as they kick off a three-game series at the Mary Brown’s Centre against the Worcester Railers. Tickets are available now at nlgrowlers.com/tickets.
