The Newfoundland Growlers dropped the opener on their eight-game road trip in a 5-2 loss to the Reading Royals on Saturday evening at Santander Arena.

Brendan Hoffmann scored shorthanded off the rush for Reading midway through the opening period to make it 1-0 Royals after 20 minutes of play.

Hoffmann nabbed his second of the game, this time on the man advantage, with just over six minutes left in the middle frame to make it 2-0 Reading.

Isaac Johnson grabbed one back for the Growlers just before the second intermission with a powerplay snipe to cut it to 2-1 Royals after the 2nd.

Max Newton picked up a single while Devon Paliani added a pair inside eight minutes of the third for the hosts to make it 5-1.

Brennan Kapcheck got a late tally for Newfoundland who would come no closer and fell 5-2.
