SERIES PREVIEW | FEBRUARY 18 & 20 AT READING

The Newfoundland Growlers embark on an eight-game road trip beginning on Saturday evening in the first of two meetings against the Reading Royals at Santander Arena.

Newfoundland last played a week ago on home ice – a 5-2 win over the Adirondack Thunder which kept them 12 points clear of the closest challenger in the North Division, now a two-way tie for second between Reading and the Maine Mariners.

Having last played on the road way back on January 28, it will be vital for the Growlers to stay hot away from home as they look to create further separation atop the division.

Reading had begun to find consistency of late before slowing down during the month of February where they’ve won just twice in seven games.

With a Royals group experiencing plenty of roster turnover from last season, inconsistency was to be expected but the hosts will hope to find some consistency no sooner than in these two meetings with the Growlers.

Newfoundland will visit Reading for the first time this season with their previous three meetings in 2022-23 all coming at the Mary Brown’s Centre and all ending in Growlers victories. With a chance to pick up their first win over a key rival, expect a motivated Royals squad to show up in this series.

Puck drops is set for 5:30 pm on Saturday and 2:30 pm on Monday afternoon. Growlers fans can watch both games live on FloSports (subscription required), listen to the call on Mixlr, or follow along on Twitter (@NLGrowlers) for game updates and highlights.

WHO TO WATCH:

NFL – Zach O’Brien (F): Back from a quick stint with the Toronto Marlies, O’Brien now sits three points back from the ECHL point race. Time to get back to work for Newfoundland’s all-time leading scorer.

REA – Max Newton (F): The team’s leading scorer on the current roster by some measure, #17 for the Royals serves as the main offensive threat for Newfoundland to open their trip.
