The Newfoundland Growlers dropped a tight contest on the road in a 5-3 loss to the Maine Mariners on Wednesday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena.
Keenan Suthers opened the scoring for Newfoundland on the man advantage with 5:37 left in the first period to give the Growlers a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Reid Stefanson replied for Maine less than two minutes into the middle frame with a powerplay strike of his own to make it 1-1 early in the 2nd.
Fedor Gordeev gave the Mariners their first lead of the game seven mintues later with a seeing eye shot to put Maine ahead 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Zach O’Brien equalized for Newfoundland seven minutes into the third period with a slick breakaway finish to bring it to 2-2.
Cam Askew sniped one shorthanded just six minutes later to restore the Maine lead, putting them ahead 3-2 with 6:55 left in regulation.
Chase Zieky found an empty Growlers net before O’Brien notched another 20 seconds later to get it back to a one goal deficit only for Pat Shea to once again finish in a yawning Newfoundland cage to seal the 5-3 win for the Mariners.
