The Newfoundland Growlers dropped back-to-back home contests in a nail biting 5-4 overtime loss to the Reading Royals on Saturday night at Mary Brown’s Centre.
Neither goalie broke in the opening frame as both Luke Cavallin and Pat Nagle were perfect to start in a 0-0 first period.
Evan Barratt finally found the first goal of the game for Reading with 5:45 left in the middle frame as he beat Cavallin on a breakaway to make it 1-0 Royals after the second period.
Barratt grabbed a second and Max Newton made it 3 for the visitors both inside the first three minutes of the third to give Reading a 3-0 lead.
Todd Skirving got the Growlers on the board with a hot shot with 13:54 to go before Shane Sellar got it back just 58 seconds later to make it 4-1 Royals.
Skirving notched a second on the powerplay five minutes later before Brett Budgell finished a highlight reel solo effort a minute later to quickly cut it to 4-3.
Zach O’Brien leveled it with 85 seconds left in regulation with a seeing eye shot through traffic to make it 4-4 and force overtime.
Barratt completed his hat-trick 1:09 into the 3-on-3 overtime period to secure both points for Reading in a 5-4 road win.
