The Newfoundland Growlers return home for the first time in a month this weekend as they host the Reading Royals in a three-game set beginning on Friday night at the Mary Brown’s Centre.
Newfoundland played their last eight contests on the road where they went 4-4-0-0 concluding most recently with a 5-2 win over the Worcester Railers last Saturday evening at the DCU Center. Following their recent road trip, the Growlers remain 10 points clear atop the North Division standings.
Reading started the season slow after a stellar 2021-22 campaign but have begun to find some momentum down the stretch and now sit third and comfortably back into the playoff picture despite dropping a 4-1 decision against Trois-Rivières on Wednesday.
These two teams played twice last month in Reading where each side took away a single win at Santander Arena, but the Growlers own a 4-1-0-0 record overall this season against the Royals thanks to a three-game sweep on home ice in their first series of the year back in October.
With a chance to secure a post season spot on the horizon for the hosts and the visitors in the middle of a fight for home ice heading into the playoffs, expect a feisty string of games between two North Division foes.
Puck drops is set for 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday night, while Sunday gets underway at 4:00 pm. Growlers fans can watch all three games live on FloSports (subscription required), listen to the call on Mixlr, or follow along on Twitter (@NLGrowlers) for game updates and highlights. Tickets for all three games can be purchased at nlgrowlers.com/tickets.
WHO TO WATCH:
NFL – Zach O’Brien (F): One point away from 70, O’Brien is also just nine points away from the franchise record 78 points he set himself in 2021-22. The St. John’s native seems to always bring his best at home so a return to the Mary Brown’s Centre bodes well for his pursuit of a new personal best.
REA – Charlie Gerard(F): Spending most of last year with the Royals AHL Affiliate in Lehigh Valley, the Royals have been fortunate to have Gerard this season as he currently leads the club in both goals (27), assists (tied at 29) and points (56).
