The Newfoundland Growlers opened their 2023 Kelly Cup Playoffs with a tough 5-3 defeat to the Adirondack Thunder on Wednesday night at Cool Insuring Arena.
Adirondack jumped out to an early two goal lead as Ryan Orgel and Matt Jennings both struck inside five minutes of the first to put the hosts up 2-0.
Newfoundland managed to get out of the opening period level as Michael Joyaux blasted a one-timer home with 6:16 left in the 1st before Orrin Centazzo scored a highlight reel powerplay goal 16 seconds prior to the first intermission to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes.
It was all Thunder in the second period as Grant Jozefek and Shane Harper got on the board for Adirondack before Orgel grabbed his second of the night to make it 5-2 for the home team heading into the third period.
Tommy Miller got the Growlers back within two with a shorthanded strike six minutes into the third to cut it to 5-3 Thunder.
Despite firing 15 third period shots at Mike Robinson, Newfoundland would get no closer as the Thunder held for a 5-3 victory to open the series.
