SERIES PREVIEW | NORTH DIVISION SEMI-FINAL VS. ADIRONDACK

The Newfoundland Growlers embark on their 2023 Kelly Cup Playoffs journey this week as they take on the Adirondack Thunder in Round One beginning on Wednesday night at Cool Insuring Arena.

In a historic regular season for Newfoundland where they set new franchise records for points (98) and wins (48), Adirondack served as a consistent thorn in the Growlers side across 2022-23.

Across 11 total meetings this year, the Growlers won six times, most recently playing a three-game set at Mary Brown’s Centre last month where Newfoundland needed overtime and a shootout to nab two wins from the tripleheader.

It was in the shootout win over the Thunder on March 18 where the Growlers clinched their postseason spot with a month to spare, ultimately finishing 10 points clear atop the North Division standings with a 48-22-2-0 record.

For the Thunder, qualifying for the postseason came down to the final day of the regular season as they edged out the Worcester Railers for the fourth and final spot in the division ending off the campaign at 32-29-9-2.

With the conclusion of the regular season, point totals reset to zero and the perceived gap between the two clubs matters little as Newfoundland and Adirondack gear up for what promises to be a physical affair between two hungry teams.

Puck drops for Game One is set for 8:30 pm on Wednesday evening and Growlers fans can watch the opener and the remainder of the series live on FloSports (subscription required), listen to the call on Mixlr, or follow along on Twitter (@NLGrowlers) for game updates and highlights. THREE SERIES STORYLINES:

Young gun goaltending:

Newfoundland’s rookie tandem of Dryden McKay and Luke Cavallin have been steady between the pipes all season long for the Growlers with the latter setting a new franchise record for wins in a season with 25.

Adirondack leaned on many netminders across 2022-23 but the pair named to their playoff roster, Jake Theut and Mike Robinson, were the one-two punch that helped them sneak into the postseason during the final weeks of the regular season.

Collectively, the four have a combined zero postseason starts at the professional level. It could be one of these four young netminders that decides this series if they rise to the occasion.

Superior special teams:

Newfoundland held the advantage over Adirondack both on the powerplay and the penalty kill across the regular season, a strength of the Growlers across the last two years under Head Coach Eric Wellwood. If the Growlers can maintain their high special teams’ standards in the playoffs, it could be advantage Newfoundland as things tighten up at even strength in the postseason.

Feeling out the format:

Due to several factors including building availability, Newfoundland begin the series away to Adirondack, but the good news is the final outcome will be decided at Mary Brown’s Centre. Additionally, if the full seven games are required, four will take place right here on the rock.

While it’s going to take a strong start on the road for the Growlers to set themselves up for success, it will be nothing more than challenge accepted for a Newfoundland team 11-8-2 all-time away from home in the postseason.
