Game Story

The Reading Royals completed the weekend sweep of the Newfoundland Growlers with a 5-3 victory at Mile One Centre Saturday night.

Adam Schmidt opened the scoring with 6:33 left in the first period after getting in all alone past the Growlers defense and making no mistake on the breakaway. Frank DiChiara extended the Royals lead to two just over a minute later firing it five-hole on Michael Garteig. The Growlers had a hard time generating offense in the first period, not registering a shot until the 17-minute mark of the opening frame.

Josh Kestner cut Reading’s lead in half at 5:58 of the second period after capitalizing on a nice setup by J.J. Piccinich for his 10th of the season, making it a 2-1 game.

Schmidt restored the two-goal lead at 13:39 of the middle frame on a shot that Garteig got a piece of but trickled in off his glove, extending the lead to 3-1.

Scott Pooley brought the Growlers to within one once again at 5:07 of the third period, re-directing a Griffen Molino pass past Booth while on a five-minute powerplay, and Molino tied the game just 34 seconds later on the same powerplay making it a 3-3 game.

Michael Hunterbrinker continued his hot weekend against the Growlers scoring a powerplay goal at 9:04 of the third period for his fourth of the weekend, giving the Royals a 4-3 lead.

Alex Krushelnyski added an empty netter with 35 seconds to play to seal the deal for a 5-3 final.
