The Newfoundland Growlers wrap up their season opening four-game home stand against the Adirondack Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils.
Sam Babintsev scored for his second in as many nights, and Giorgio Estephan netted his first pro goal, but it wasn’t enough as the Florida Everblades edged the Newfoundland Growlers 3-2 Saturday night at Mile One Centre to split Molson Opening Weekend. Kyle Platzer, Steven Lorentz and Mitch Vangergunst scored for the Everblades.
Oct. 15: G Eamon McAdam recalled by Toronto (NHL) on emergency recall
Sam Babintsev leads the Growlers with two goals, and is in a three-way tie for the team lead in points with Marcus Power and Scott Pooley who each have two assists. Eamon McAdam’s win Friday night was the 25th ECHL win of his career. Evan Neugold leads the club in plus/minus with a +3 rating through two games.
Adirondack teams are no stranger to Newfoundland as both the Red Wings and Phantoms have played in St. John’s during the AHL era. The Adirondack Red Wings defeated the St. John’s Maple Leafs for the Calder Cup in the 1991-92 season. The Thunder doubled up on the Maine Mariners, another ECHL expansion franchise, 6-3 Saturday night. John Edwardh had four points in the game.
